We’re halfway through 2026. Do you actually know how your business is doing — or are you just hoping the numbers work out?
This is the question most small business owners avoid asking until December. By then, the year is over. What you do right now determines whether 2026 ends on your terms.
5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before July 1
1. Am I actually profitable — not just busy?
Pull your Profit & Loss statement for January through June. Revenue and profitability are not the same thing. If your margins are thinner than expected, now is the time to find out why — not in October.
2. Do I have enough cash for the next 90 days?
Map out your expected income and expenses through September. A lot of Chicagoland businesses are profitable on paper and stressed about cash at the same time. If you see a gap, you still have time to address it — tighten expenses, accelerate collections, or open a line of credit.
3. Are my estimated taxes on track?
Q2 was due June 15. Q3 is due September 15. Do you have a number in mind, or are you winging it? Underpayment penalties are small but entirely avoidable.
4. Am I on pace to hit my revenue goal?
Take your year-to-date revenue, divide by six, multiply by 12. Is that number close to your goal? If not, what changes in Q3?
5. Are my books actually current?
If you can’t answer the questions above because your books aren’t up to date — that is the answer. You’re making decisions without data, and that’s the most dangerous financial position a small business can be in.
Red Flags Worth Addressing Right Now
- Revenue is up but cash is consistently tight
- You’re using credit cards to cover operating expenses
- You haven’t looked at a financial report in more than 60 days
- You don’t know your gross margin without guessing
Any one of these is worth fixing before Q3 starts. All of them together is a fire that needs to be put out now.
